SERVICE AND OUTREACH VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Â
The following descriptions identify agencies that our church supports with finances, prayer and volunteer service. Here are some of their needs and the church members who can help you find a way to get involved.
Â
American Red Cross offers relief to victims of disasters and emergencies. Twice a year (March and October) SACPC sponsors a blood drive in Brown Hall to support the American Red Cross. Volunteers are needed to donate blood and to provide assistance in managing the drive.
Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity helps those who need homes with a hand up. SACPC often sponsors a house-build and needs people for construction, painting, and pre paring lunches for volunteers. Â
Cape Fear Literacy Council provides adult literacy services. The primary volunteer need is for tutors, either in partnership with adult learners or as an instructor for a small class of adults learning English. Volunteers are also needed to help children in the Family Literacy program, and in the computer lab, with fundraisers, bulk mailings, and general office help.
Domestic Violence Shelter and Services provides safety and support for survivors of domestic violence and education to our community. Volunteers offer support services such as: making meals, helping victims of domestic violence and/or their children (including night/weekend on-call workers), assisting with office work, serving on committees, and working with EVOLVE Wilmington! (domestic violence prevention). Â
Elderhaus is an adult day care center that provides caring supervision and socialization for adults and provides respite for the caregivers. Volunteer opportunities include participation in leisure activities for the senior participants. Â
Good Shepherd Ministries provides food, shelter and services for the homeless, with many opportunities to give. We especially need volunteers to serve dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. a couple of Friday nights a year.
Second Helpings is a service of Good Shepherd Ministries. If you have two or three hours to spend just four Saturday mornings a year, we need your help to collect food from various Wilmington establishments to be distributed to organizations that help feed the community. Â
Hospitality House provides lodging and support services for family members of out-f-town patients begin treated a New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Cape Fear Hospital. Assistance at the main desk is a needed service.
International Seamen’s Center serves merchant seamen when their ship is in port, offering hospitality, spiritual counseling, books, magazines and transportation to shopping areas.
Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life-Care Center, providing loving care to persons near life’s end and to their families, needs volunteers to serve in various capacities, including: office work, fund raising, speakers, working with patients and families, the vigil team, pet therapy, music therapy, children’s camp, and volunteering as a chaplain. Training is offered.
Phoenix Employment Ministry is a Christian based agency that endeavors to find meaningful long term employment for the homeless or nearly homeless. Volunteers are needed to give a few hours each month to help in the office, provide mentoring, or drive applicants to job interviews or work.
Salvation Army, motivated by the Christian mandate to serve our neighbor, helps people in hardship through numerous ways of giving. Volunteers are especially needed during preparations for Christmas: ring the bell at kettles or help to prepare toys and gifts for children and families on Distribution Day. Â
Shelter Care is a ministry of our congregation, a strong fellowship of men with carpentry and construction skills who build wheel chair ramps for the infirm or elderly.Â
United Christian Campus Ministries (UCCM) serves students at Cape Fear Community College and the University of North Carolina Wilmington. UCCM offers fellowship for students who desire to continue and expand their religious experiences. The student FOCUS group meets weekly with UCCM minister, Kevin Hay. Twice yearly there is a dinner where attendance by members of SACPC shows our support. Â
Wilmington Interfaith Hospitality Network (WIHN) provides homeless families with emergency shelter and assistance for transition to independent living. Our partnership with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church provides 2 quarterly evening service opportunities for church members to prepare, host and serve a meal for temporarily homeless families participating in WIHN. Â
Wilmington’s Adolescent Achievement Place (WRAAP), an after-school enrichment program, needs tutors and helpers. Â
Yahweh Center, serving to heal and find homes for children of abuse, needs volunteers to serve as mentors to spend one hour a week with a child doing fun activities.
