3rd Sunday of Advent
This Sunday
Listening to the Message of Silence
Rev. Katherine B. Harrington
On this 3rd Sunday of Advent, Katie will lead us in worship with sermon text from Luke 1:5-20; 57-66. God often speaks to us through the mess of our lives, when things aren't going well. But God also calls us to share the message of the good news because of and in spite of who we are and where we are. This Advent season we explore God's Messengers.
We will also be collected Christmas Joy Offerings.

On This Human Rights Day Be Like A Hummingbird!
by Emily Donovan
Tuesday, December 10th is Human Rights Day. The United Nations celebrates it every year to commemorate the ratification of a global pledge that all human beings have inalienable rights. This declaration is foundational to the existence of the United Nations.
But, what does it have to do with you and me?
As many of you know, I'm passionate about protecting our community from toxic PFAS exposures (click here to learn more about North Carolina's PFAS contamination crisis). In my spare time, I'm co-founder of a grassroots community group called Clean Cape Fear. I work to hold companies like DuPont and Chemours accountable for decades of PFAS contamination to our water, air, soil, and food supply.
Two years ago, when Chemours announced plans to expand production of PFAS in North Carolina, I was extremely concerned. So many in our region were still drinking high levels of PFAS contaminated tap water. I decided to reach out the United Nations Human Rights Council. UN human rights experts started an investigation and earlier this year issued an official public statement calling out DuPont and Chemours for business-related human rights abuses in our region.

UN human rights experts started an investigation and earlier this year issued an official public statement calling out DuPont and Chemours for business-related human rights abuses in our region.
In April, the U.S. EPA issued first ever federal PFAS drinking water standards--a monumental and historical announcement that will vastly improve the quality of public tap water for millions of Americans. The announcement was made in Fayetteville, along the Cape Fear River, and I had the honor of introducing U.S. EPA Administrator Regan during the press conference.
In October, I was invited to New York City to participate in events associated with the United Nations General Assembly meetings. I was recognized as a human rights defender for the work I and so many others have been doing to address PFAS contamination in the United States.
While in the UN gift shop, I came across a lapel pin of a hummingbird. It was part of last year's UN World Water Day campaign encouraging people to Be Like A Hummingbird.
There's an ancient story about the hummingbird. The forest caught on fire and all the animals gathered and watched the fire. However, the hummingbird chose to carry droplets of water from the nearby lake to put the big fire out. The other animals laughed at the hummingbird until she replied, "I'm doing what I can."

However, the hummingbird chose to carry droplets of water from the nearby lake to put the big fire out. The other animals laughed at the hummingbird until she replied, "I'm doing what I can."
The hummingbird's story reminds me of the parable of the widow's coins. In both Luke and Mark, Jesus shows His disciples the widow gave the most, even if the impact seemed small, because her offering was not from her abundance but from all she had--similar to the hummingbird.
For years, I've known my actions are tiny, but I trust God is working through me, and so many others, to combine my tiny "droplets" and use them to put out the bigger fires.
So, on this Human Rights Day, I challenge each of you to Be Like A Hummingbird. Have faith that your small actions, when combined with big institutional changes, can and do have an impact. I am living testimony that God is always working through us--so long as we have the courage to act.

Ducks in a Row 6-Week Workshop
by Phyllis Smith
Do you have your "ducks in a row"?
In other words, do you have all of the information your executor and family will need at the end of your life? I thought I did until I discovered Ducks in a Row, a six week workshop that helps you compile all imaginable information your loved ones will need, even including plans for your pets!
Ducks in a Row is a non-profit and the only expense will be $40.00 to cover the cost of the notebook you will use and take home with you. If a couple participates there will be an extra $5.00 because there will be pages that each participant will complete.
For four of the classes there will be invited speakers: Someone from Hospice, our own Sue Stricker; a financial advisor; an estate attorney; and someone from Andrews Mortuary.
The classes will be held every other Monday beginning January 13th from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm on the following dates:
January 13 and 27
February 10 and 24
March 10 and 17
If you are interested, and I hope you will be, please contact me at 910-616-8707. The class size will be limited to 18 participants and registration is required.

We want to thank our Church family for all the prayers, cards and kind reassuring messages regarding the passing of our sister, Libby Gwennap. Please pray for her husband of 46 years, Tim, as he adjusts to life without his wife and best friend.
Volunteer Opportunity: 2025 Ushers Needed
by Jeff Denlinger
Ushering is a simple way to serve and enhance your Sunday experience. It’s an Elder and Deacon responsibility, but any congregant is welcome. We use SignUpGenius for scheduling, making it easy to sign-up for Sundays when you are available. If you’ve ushered in the past, please rejoin the team by sending me your email address. For “newbies”, we’ll ensure to mentor you to get comfortable. If, by chance, you receive an unsolicited email SignUpGenius, consider it a “God Wink”.
Heating and Air Conditioning Replacement Is Underway!
by Jim Benson
The project to replace the SACPC heating and air conditioning systems is now underway. The current antiquated systems (some over 65 years old!) have long been in need of an update. New high efficiency heat pumps have arrived and were placed on the roof overlooking Dock Street in early November. Work inside the building should begin the first week of December and construction will likely continue into late summer of 2025.
Installation will be sequenced to mitigate impact to SACPC activities, but some disruptions should be expected to allow this important project to be accomplished. The sanctuary will also be out of service for several months at the end of construction but will include exciting new renovations to the worship space. Staff will be coordinating the Contractor activities. Please contact Catheryn Thomas with any scheduling concerns.

There Is Still Time To Support Education in Malawi
by Shelley Hobson
The gift that truly keeps on giving is a donation to send children to school in Malawi. If you would like to give a gift that will not only warm the heart of someone you love but also change a child's future, become a partner in SACPC's Malawi Education campaign.
A gift of $75 will outfit a student with shoes, a uniform, and a book bag. It can send a child to preschool where he will also receive a meal of enriched porridge (often the only meal the child receives that day). $100 or more can help a secondary school student pay for school fees and supplies.
Our partnership also funds the Saturday Feeding Program at Chuluchosema CCAP where young people receive vocational training in tailoring, woodworking and masonry, as well as a meal.
In the fourth poorest country in our world, any gift will make a difference in the life of a child or young person. Please send a check noted Malawi Education to the church office, or give online (use the pulldown menu to select Malawi Education).
If you are giving your gift in honor of friends or family, gift cards are available in the church office, on the table in the Gathering Area or at the 15th Street entrance to the narthex. Your gift this Giving Tuesday will change a child's future. Zikomo! (Thank you!)

Gift Wrapping Possibilities
by Earth Care Team Education
“Modern gift-wrapping paper and ribbons cannot be recycled. They are a layered composition of paper with plastic in the form of glitter, gloss, and metallic coating.”
“For holiday gifting, reuse last year’s bags, gift wrap and ribbons. If you must buy new, consider premade fabric gift bags that can be used for decades. To close the bag use jute twine and add branches, twigs or dried flowers.
Another option is the traditional art of Japanese gift wrapping with cloth, known as furoshiki. It is elegant, easy and environmentally friendly. Choose a square piece of strong cloth three times longer at the diagonal than the gift . You can use a bandanna or scarf. Place the item you want to wrap on the cloth at a diagonal. Lift and lay the top and bottom corners over the gift. Then lift the remaining two corners and tie a double knot.”
